3. You can make money on the internet also by selling something you own. Now this can be a service you offer as part of your job. It could be by selling goods you have bought to sell on eg an antiques dealer.

Better still, you could create a product or have someone do it for you to sell online yourself and you get to keep all the money you make online. Even better, you could now have other people sell your product and not pay them unless they make a sale. That sounds cool.

I believe that is the starting point we need to understand about making an income online, especially if you are a newbie.

Wait a minute, you say. No salesman would ever do such a patently stupid thing.

For some odd reason a distinctly Madison Avenue type reason most businesses believe that to drive sales all they need do is literally literally present a pretty picture.

For their corporate website theyll hire a web design company to create dramatic MTV-quality multi-media flash presentations that are extremely adept at selling… what else, the web design company.

Or theyll load their web pages with graphics and fonts that dazzle and overwhelm if not permanently blind the eye believing that eye candy alone will motivate their visitors to click the Submit Order button (if only they can find it).

Or theyll hire an ad agency to design a full page ad which will then organize an expedition to the top of Mt. Everest to photograph a smiling Sherpa using their clients toilet bowl cleaner (while the companys contact information will be at the bottom of the mountain, buried in the snow).

Or theyll commission a 60-second TV spot of a digitally created woman running through a digitally created field of flowers with digitally created children and dogs in tow believing this will prompt viewers to run to their phones to request an auto insurance quote though no phone number is provided (after all, why ruin the effect.)

Sure, many people (though not necessarily those being targeted) will gush about how imaginative, entertaining, fun and creative these ads, websites or TV commercials are and, ironically, theyll win numerous coveted awards.

But the companies that commissioned these expensive misadventures… will quietly and quickly go bankrupt, because…

Pretty Ads, TV Commercials and Websites DO NOT Generate Sales!

You see, for most businesses, marketing and advertising is decoration, corporate ego aggrandizement the thumping of chests and the hollow bellowing of achievement.

Copy, as in words that sell, is viewed as a crass intrusion by these purveyors and consumers of Madison Avenue style advertising. Its low-brow an embarrassment that cheapens and detracts from a companys overall image and effect.

And yet, if some bonehead ad exec writes a headline or ditty thats catchy, cute, indecipherable, and also rhymes itll quickly become the companys new tagline, though itll be roundly ignored by the audience its intended to attract.

Why? Because it wont speak to their immediate needs and wants; suggests no understanding of their situation; implies no benefits, and asks for no action to be taken.

Mail a picture of your product to your customers without any copy on it. Then, mail a sales letter without any pictures or graphics on it to those same customers, asking that they make a purchase.

Then tell me which mailing received more orders.

Am I suggesting that you remove all pictures, graphics, flash and dazzle from your marketing materials?

No, absolutely not.

Design, and all that it implies, should be subservient as in supportive of your sales copy, not the other way around.

The sole purpose of design is to help the copy sell whether in a website, print ad, brochure or email.

It is there to simply direct the readers eye to the sales copy.

If design overwhelms or in anyway marginalizes or distracts the reader from your copy your sales will suffer.

Because only words can sell only words can persuade only words can ask for the order.

So rather than rely on artificial artifice (overly indulgent design) to create a picture of you, your company, product or service paint a picture of your product or service with words.

Talk to your customers. Capture your customers patronage and loyalty with sincere, passionate and actionable words.

Tell Them Why They Should Buy!

Frame your sales message with design, and design your sales message with words. Youll stay in business a lot longer, and make a lot more money than your competitors whove been seduced and led astray by the dazzling dark side of design.

For nearly forty years I have been interested, or should I say obsessed with my camera and photography. For the past twenty five years I have been earning a small amount with my camera, shooting the odd wedding and portraits in my spare time. I have even sold my pictures to magazines. Now that was a confidence booster if you ever need one.

Then about three years ago I came across a website called iStockphoto. It was a Microstock Library. I thought then that it was called Microstock because of the poor payment for the use of your images. I didnt take a lot of notice because there was no way that I was going to sell my photographs for twenty cents. Id rather keep them on my hard drive, or so I thought.

A few months later I came across this site again. This time I was looking for inspiration in the form of picture ideas. What did surprise me was the number of photographers I thought were almost giving their images away. As I am a bit of a Stat Master and like to keep a check on the figures etc, I bookmarked the site, going back and checking the stats everyday.

What really hit me was the number of images waiting to be reviewed. Then never went down, the total number of images that had been submitted increased each and everyday. I thought that it was time to have a closer look.

I browsed the photographs that were on file and thought to myself, I could take that or I have a better shot than that. Then it hit me.. In the past few months how many images could I have sold? If I had twenty files per week downloaded for the past six months at twenty cents each, I would have earned one hundred and four dollars. Not life changing but the money was for nothing. No fees, no costs and I already had some decent images sat gathering dust on my hard drive.

So I registered and submitted my images. As each image was accepted I couldnt wait to upload more. It became my new obsession. Within a week my hard drive was empty of the images that I thought that were any good, or rather suitable to upload so I started to photograph anything and everything. If I went out for the day I would shoot images to upload. If I stayed in I would shoot images around the home to upload. I even took my camera to work with me.

So after three years of submitting to iStockphoto and over nine thousand downloads do you know which images sell month after month, year after year? Well its the photographs that I took in my own home. Forget the Yorkshire Dales or the Yorkshire Coastline, and as for my holiday in Florida, the photographs hardly sold. The images that I took in our home of the kitchen radiator, fire surround and our white w.c., outsell them all.

But thats the magic of Microstock Photography. Almost any subject will sell if its different and the quality is O.K. The main subjects that sell will vary from one library to another so submit to them all. The secret is to make a start and submit some of you photographs providing they meet the specified guidelines. Then once you are accepted just keep submitting, shooting more images and keep submitting. You wont generate a life changing income overnight. But over a period of time who knows?
